Five Tips to Choose Your Perfect First Dance Wedding Song
Posted on
Your wedding day is getting closer and you have almost everything ready --- except for the music. What song should you and your fiancé choose for the first dance? The first dance is, for a lot of couples, the most meaningful part of the festivity because it’s a very personal moment. Deciding on a song for your first dance should be enjoyable, but it can be tricky sometimes.
Consider how the song describes your relationship. One of the first things you need to do is try to select a song that corresponds with your feelings towards one another. However, be sure to examine the lyrics of a song closely. Sure, the chorus or title might be just what you’re looking for but some songs aren’t suitable for weddings. For example, one of the many popular wedding songs is Robbie Williams’ “Angels”. There’s a line in the song that says, “And I feel that love is dead. I’m loving angels instead.” It’s not appropriate for a wedding. So be sure to read the lyrics and listen carefully to the whole song before the two of you decide.
Select a song you can dance to. You may have found a first dance song with the ideal lyrics, but if the song is too slow, like Etta James’ “At Last”, or too fast, like Frank Sinatra’s “I Get a Kick Out of You”, it’s going to cause problems on the dance floor. The song you choose should fit your ability as a couple to keep the pace on the dance floor. Some terrific choices for a first dance are: George Strait’s “I Cross My Heart”, Brian Adams’ “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” and Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. Similarly, you don’t want a first dance song that’s too long. U2’s “All I Want Is You” is a great song, but it’s seven minutes long! A good length for a wedding song is between three and four minutes. It’s a great idea to practice the dance a few times to get a feel for the song and make sure it’s definitely the one you both want as your first dance.
Create a potential first dance song list. Making a list will assure that you get to have that perfect song at your wedding. Also, you might think about songs that are sung by different artists. For instance, the song “How Deep Is Your Love” has been recorded by Take That as well as originally sung by the Bee Gees. Your list could be as long or as short as you’d like—with the top three songs being your most favorite.
Make it an unforgettable song. Once both of you have written down your possible song list, peruse the list and notice which songs stick out as a song that you’ll remember and love for many years to come. You may find you have several! If so, put them at the top of your list.
Acquire your selected song. Once you’ve picked the precise song, you’ll need to make sure that the band or DJ can play it as the first dance. If you’re stuck on which song to choose, question your band or DJ—they should be able to assist you, particularly if they’ve performed for weddings before. A dance teacher might also have some good suggestions.
It should be fun and stress-free searching for your first dance song. Once you choose that special song, you can dance as newlyweds with confidence and ease at your reception. The right song will make the end of your wedding day sensational!
